The Tale of Peter Rabbit

February 19, 2009

When Mrs. Rabbit begs her four furry children to stay away from Mr. McGregor’s garden, the impish Peter Rabbit naturally takes this as an open invitation to create mischief. But when he is spotted by the farmer himself, the chase is on! A century after it was first published, Beatrix Potter’s beloved tale of a certain naughty bunny with a taste for radishes continues to enchant readers. Using Potter’s original text, popular illustrator Michael Hague has made Peter’s world bigger and brighter than ever, bringing this cherished tale to a new generation of youngsters, in a larger format that will delight mischievous bunnies young and old.

ISBN: 0811849066

PlainTales Comments: Many people think the original illustrations by Beatrix Potter are hard to top, and generally that’s true, but Michael Hague does an excellent job with his illustration of the tale. Unlike many illustrated classics for this age the story is unabridged just like the PlainTales version found in The Tailor of Gloucester and Other Tales by Beatrix Potter.

PlainTales Comments: This is an abridged version of the original Nathaniel Hawthorne story found in A Wonder Book for Girls and Boys. The daughter in this version also has a different name than the original. The story is beautifully illustrated though and most of the story line is the same.

PlainTales Comments: Michael Hague has illustrated a number of great children’s classics and this is a wonderful example of his work. This book makes an excellent compliment to the PlainTales unabridged recording of The Reluctant Dragon.

Rip Van Winkle

February 19, 2009

You’ve heard the story of Rip Van Winkle, that curious fellow who, with his dog Wolf, ran away from a hard day’s work to the Catskill Mountains. He ran into a band of revelers who gave him a drink so powerful he slept for twenty years. Here is the retelling and re-creation by Will Moses, an artist of the upper Hudson River himself, who knows the lands of this river valley. He brings Washington Irving’s classic tale to life with breathtaking landscapes and his unmistakable folk style.

ISBN: 0399231528

PlainTales Comments: Washington Irving’s story is beautifully written in its original language and that’s why we recorded it in its unabridged form in the PlainTales title Rip Van Winkle + The Devil and Tom Walker. But we agree that some of the archaic language can be challenging. The unabridged version is actually more accessible as an audio recording where the unfamiliar words can be understand from their context. Will Moses’ retelling is done with obvious for the original and the illustration help bring the story to life.

The same things we work to accomplish in our retellings.

PlainTales Comments: Listeners who enjoyed the PlainTales titles Paul Bunyan and Other American Tall Tales should enjoy these excellent retellings as well. The Ugly Duckling

February 19, 2009

Once upon a time, there was a maligned misfit who grew into the most glorious creature of them all. Never has such a fairy tale transformation touched more hearts than the one in “The Ugly Duckling,” one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most familiar and cherished stories. Now, in the hands of esteemed translator Stephen Mitchell, an iconographic fable regains all the humor and pathos of its very first telling. And with their vivid, arresting collage illustrations, Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher bring an oft-told tale to soaring new life.

ISBN: 0763621595

PlainTales Comments: This is not the same translation used in the PlainTales unabridged recording of The Ugly Duckling and Other Tales by Hans Christian Andersen but it’s interesting to compare the two versions of the classic story and the excellent illustration makes a great complement to either version.
